Your Opportunity
Under the limited supervision of the Manager, Infrastructure, the IT Infrastructure & Cloud Specialist is responsible for the design, administration, and optimization of Okanagan College’s IT infrastructure. The IT Infrastructure & Cloud Specialist role encompasses responsibilities ranging from network design and server administration to Active Directory management, Microsoft 365 oversight, server patching, and cloud management in Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Furthermore, the Specialist provides specialized technical support and guidance to Okanagan College staff on relevant issues. This position oversees the auxiliary employees and co-op students as assigned.
Functions and Duties
Network Design and Administration:

  • Develop comprehensive network architecture plans to ensure scalability and efficiency in collaboration with the Manager, Infrastructure.
  • Execute network design plans, incorporating the latest technologies and best practices.
  • Regularly assess and enhance on-premises network infrastructure for optimal performance.

Server and Active Directory Management:

  • Oversee on-premises server operations, ensuring reliability, security, and performance.
  • Deploy and configure server hardware and software components according to industry standards.
  • Provide timely resolution to server-related issues and implement preventive measures.
  • Implement and maintain effective Active Directory services.

Microsoft 365 and Security Oversight

  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and group policies efficiently.
  • Oversee and manage the Microsoft 365 tenant, ensuring proper configuration, security, and user provisioning.
  • Formulate a comprehensive server patch management strategy.
  • Apply security patches and updates promptly to ensure system integrity.
  • Regularly monitor and assess patch compliance, addressing any issues proactively.

Cloud Management and Infrastructure Optimization:

  • Administer and optimize cloud environments in Azure and AWS.
  • Implement and manage cloud resources to ensure scalability and security.
  • Continuously optimize cloud infrastructure for cost-effectiveness and performance.
  • Actively contribute to the design and architecture of the overall IT infrastructure.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and best practices to enhance system design.
  • Collaborate with the IT team to implement innovative solutions for improved efficiency.

Ticket Management:

  • Respond promptly and efficiently to IT support tickets.
  • Provide end-users with effective technical support for issue resolution.
  • Document solutions and resolutions to build a comprehensive knowledge base.
  • Collaborate with peers, teammates and clients across different functions and locations to deliver high-quality results

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Over 4 years and up to and including 6 years of progressive directly related experience.

PREFERRED: Linux system management skills would be an asset as would wired and wireless network management skills.

Proven experience in network design, server administration, Active Directory management, and Microsoft 365.
Skills and Abilities
  • Familiarity with cloud management in Azure and AWS.
  • Strong knowledge of security best practices and protocols.
  • Experience in system design and architecture in a mixed on-premises and cloud environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team.
  • Must have the ability to monitor, recommend and take action on issues that may have considerable operational implications
  • Proven project management skills
  • Ability to analyze user requirements and develop effective solutions
  • Excellent organizational, administrative and problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding research skills with ability to synthesize data/information and develop/deliver findings and recommendations
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills with the ability to create and deliver key messages to general and targeted audiences
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Competent to work with limited supervision
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with an aptitude for working in a collegial and collaborative environment
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a high work volume and competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Superior attention to detail and accuracy
