Your Opportunity | Under the limited supervision of the Manager, Infrastructure, the Connectivity Technician is responsible for installing and supporting classroom technology including projectors, screens, whiteboards, video-conferencing technologies, data and voice networks by running, pulling, terminating, splicing cables, fibre termination, and installing telecommunications equipment, routers, switches and cable trays. This position will also assist in the administration of audio-visual and voice system software account maintenance and may be required to provide training or advice related to audio visual and telecom technologies to other IT, media, and classroom services staff. The Connectivity Technician actively seeks to explore options to add value and/or resolve concerns of College stakeholders and maintains knowledge of best practices and industry trends by participating in educational opportunities and reviewing current technical publications. |
Functions and Duties | 1. Plans network installations through studying customer requests, plans, manuals, and technical specifications. 2. Responsible for the physical installation of IT hardware including, mounting TV’s, projectors, sound systems, network switches, wireless access points, etc. 3. Installs and repairs digital communication networks including installing equipment and handling necessary maintenance tasks (collaborating with other internal service providers as necessary). 4. Performs jack installations, cross connections, patch panels related to telecom and audio visual installations. 5. Diagnoses current circuit issues and works to resolve related problems. 6. Prepares and maintains all necessary documentation to keep records current and equipment appropriately labelled. 7. Maintains an inventory of spare parts including cables, headsets, telephones and orders equipment, supplies, material, tools as required. 8. Assesses installations sites and prepares necessary installation diagrams for renovations and projects. 9. Monitors contractor cabling work for adherence to cabling standards. 10. Assists in in the development of policies and procedures related to network and telephone equipment. 11. Assists in the administration of voice systems account management. 12. Complies with all safety regulations. 13. Maintains currency with respect to best practices and industry trends by participating in educational opportunities and reviewing current technical technical publications. 14. Performs other related duties as required. |
Education and Experience | Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent and graduation from a two year post secondary program in a related area. Minimum 2 years of related experience. |
Skills and Abilities | - Strong technical, analytical, problem solving skills - Knowledge of network design an asset - Knowledge of voice systems - Ability to frequently lift and move a large variety of equipment of up to 20 kg. and occasionally move/lift equipment of more than 20 kg. - This position will, on occasion, have to work in confined spaces - Prioritize and organize work effectively - Ability to work with minimal supervision - Excellent customer interaction skills and communication skills - Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings, weekends and overtime |
